LA COCINA DE VALERIANO VOL.5

The Ingredients
In this edition of “La Cocina de Valeriano” (Valeriano Cuisine), we bring you a very practical and easy recipe of a delicious coffee cake for you to enjoy in the morning or at tea hour. The prep work takes less than 10 minutes, and the rest is done by an oven! Despite the fact that this cake was a double debut (mine as a baker and Jolla’s as a baking pan) it turned out fantastic and was approved by the owner of the hostel Kusilla Kuyuk in Tilcara, where I did the baking.

The cake is ready!!
The essentials: working oven, a receptacle to be used as a baking pan, a spacious container to mix the ingredients.

Ingredients: 2 cups flower, 1 table spoon flower (to sprinkle the baking container), 2 tea spoon baking soda, 2 cups of sugar, 1 cup of powder milk, water, 1 egg (optional), 1 cup grapes, 1 cup raisins, ½ cup walnuts, 1 tea spoon butter or oil, cinnamon powder (optional).

Process:
  • Obtain grapes and walnuts avoiding sources where money transactions are required (suggestion: relative’s yard, hostel garden, etc.).
  • Wash the grapes and cut them in halves or quarters.
  • Extract the walnuts from the shells (make sure not to chop off your fingers) and crush them with something heavy (you want the nuts to be broken into small pieces).
  • Preheat the oven to medium temperature.
  •  Slightly melt the butter in the baking container and spread the butter on the container walls and bottom.
  • Spread 1 table spoon of flower in the pan. Do this well, or you will not get your cake out of the pan and will have to eat it directly from the baking pan.
  • In a separate container mix flower, baking soda, sugar, powder milk, cinnamon, walnuts, grapes and raisins. It is always better to mix directly with your hands, so dig in and get dirty!
  • Begin adding water while continuously mixing the dough with your hands. Once the mixture has a consistency of runny sour cream, place it into the baking receptacle.
  • Place the baking container in the oven for about 1 hour. To check if the cake is ready, stick a knife in the middle of the cake and see if any dough got stuck to the metal. Once there is no stickiness, the cake is ready to be removed.
  • Cover the baking container with a plate and do a 180 motion so that the container is up side down.
  • Place the cake on a plate and serve!

Enjoy!
